Implanon

At Bellbowrie Family Practice we are pleased to offer Implanon, a long-lasting contraceptive. The procedure is fast and effective and our experienced doctors perform it here in our rooms.

What is Implanon?

Implanon is a small rubber rod that is inserted under the skin of the inside upper arm. It contains the hormone etonogestrol (similar to progesterone) that prevents pregnancy. Once inserted, you will be able to feel it under your skin, but it is not visible.

How Does Implanon Work?

The implant releases small amounts of the hormones that prevent ovulation. It also thickens the mucous of the cervix, making it harder for sperm to enter.

How Effective Is Implanon?

Implanon is one of the most effective birth control methods available, with a 99.9% success rate. However, no birth control is 100% effective and there is still a small risk of pregnancy.

Is Implanon Right For Me?

Implanon might be a good choice for you if you:

  • Want long term birth control
  • Have trouble remembering to take the contraceptive Pill
  • Don’t mind changes in your bleeding pattern
  • Want a contraceptive method that you don’t have to think about
  • Want a highly effective contraceptive
  • Have painful periods

Who Shouldn’t Use Implanon?

Women who have had breast cancer shouldn’t use Implanon. Women who take certain medications should also avoid its use. Your doctor can advise if Implanon is suitable for you.

How Long Does Implanon Last?

Implanon lasts for five years, but can be removed at any time.
